Balliol College, University of Oxford - Dervorguilla Scholarship

Benefit

You will receive funding of up to 3 years for a Master’s degree at Balliol College, which is part of the University of Oxford. What the funding covers depends on the form in which it is awarded. On its own, it covers the college fees for Master’s students. When combined with another form of funding, such as the Clarendon Fund or a UK Research Council scholarship, it covers all university and college fees as well as a contribution towards your living costs. Balliol College awards this grant each year to one or more women studying in the natural sciences, medicine or the social sciences. It is named after Dervorguilla von Galloway, the college’s co-founder.

Eligibility

• Gender: You are a woman.
• Level: You are applying for a Master’s degree programme (postgraduate study) at Oxford.
• College: You are studying at Balliol College. If you win the scholarship, you will also be offered a place at Balliol College.
• Field of study: You are studying medicine, social sciences, mathematics or natural and life sciences.
• Fee status: You will pay the tuition fees applicable to international students, i.e. you are not considered a home student in the UK. Applicants of any nationality are welcome to apply.
• Academic record: You have an excellent academic record.

How to apply

There is no separate application process. You should submit your application for admission to your chosen Master’s programme at Oxford by the deadline in December or January. Every eligible applicant from Balliol will automatically be considered for the scholarship.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is very narrowly defined: it is open only to women, only to students paying international tuition fees, only in certain science, medical and social science departments, and only to those who have been admitted to Balliol. The group of eligible applicants is small, but the number of funding places is equally limited, and gaining admission to Oxford is the real hurdle. If you clearly meet the criteria and secure a place at Balliol College, your chances are good, as no additional application is required.
