About this scholarship

Organ Scholarship at the University of Dundee

You will receive approximately 350 EUR per year (300 GBP) per academic year, as well as around 30 organ lessons. The scholarship runs for the entire duration of your Bachelor’s degree, i.e. up to 36 months. The scholarship is awarded by the University of Dundee Chaplaincy. In return, you will play the organ in the chapel during university services, such as the opening service, the Christmas service and, occasionally, evening prayers. You will also accompany the university choir at rehearsals and concerts as required.

Who can apply

  • Instrument: You play the organ very well.
  • Degree: You are studying for a bachelor’s degree at the University of Dundee.
  • Field of study: Any subject is fine; you don’t necessarily have to study music.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
  • Staying in the role: To retain the scholarship for next year, you must pass an audition in front of a panel and receive a positive recommendation.

How to apply

You apply to the Chaplaincy at the University of Dundee, which administers the music scholarships for organists and singers. You give an audition before a panel, both to be awarded the scholarship and to renew it each year.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is quite specific: it is awarded to organists who are studying in Dundee and who can commit to playing at the university’s church services and choral events, meaning that very few people apply for it. If you are a good organist and can take on these responsibilities, your prospects are good. The value lies primarily in the role as organist and in teaching, not in the modest remuneration; therefore, a genuine interest in the post is what matters most.
