Benefit

You receive £1,500 per year (about 1,750 EUR) for the full length of your engineering degree. That means three or four years for a BArch, BEng or MEng, paid in three instalments each year from October 2026. If you start on the Engineering and Physical Sciences Foundation Year instead, you get £1,500 (about 1,750 EUR) for that one year. It continues automatically if you move up with a 60% average or above. The money is meant for your everyday living costs, not for tuition fees. It is funded by donations from University of Nottingham alumni and friends of the faculty, who set it up for students who have overcome barriers in their education.

Eligibility

• Where you study: You are starting the first year of a Faculty of Engineering degree (BArch, BEng or MEng) or the Engineering and Physical Sciences Foundation Year at the University of Nottingham (UK Campus). You must name Nottingham as your first-choice university on UCAS. If you are already on the foundation year and moving into year one with a 60% average or above, you can also apply.
• Degree level: This is your first undergraduate degree.
• Residence: You have Home funding status, meaning you have lived in the UK for at least the three years before your course starts. Refugee status and European migrant-worker status can also count.
• Financial need: Your 2024/25 household income, as assessed by Student Finance, is between £0 and £42,875.
• No other sponsor: No company or employer sponsors your course. University Core Bursaries and government grants are fine.
• Overcoming barriers: You have faced and overcome obstacles in your education, for example a low-income background, illness or disability, or disruption at home.

How to apply

You apply through an online form. You add a supporting statement with a few short answers about the barriers you have overcome, your activities outside your studies, and how the award will help your goals. A panel scores your written application. Everyone hears the result by email within four weeks of the deadline. The deadline for 2026 entry was Friday 10 April 2026.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is limited to engineering students at one university who meet a firm income cap and a residence rule, so the eligible group is small. For 2026 there are over 40 funded awards, which is generous for a single-faculty scheme. If you clearly meet the criteria and write a strong supporting statement about the barriers you have overcome, your prospects are good.
