About this scholarship
Greenwich Hospital Bursary
For postgraduate study at University of Greenwich in the United Kingdom, you will receive up to 3,450 EUR per year (up to 3,000 GBP). Full-time students will receive the payment in May. Part-time students will receive a smaller amount, which is intended solely to cover tuition fees. The scholarship is valid for one academic year. You may renew it year on year, provided your studies are progressing well; Greenwich Hospital, the charity that funds the scholarship, decides on each renewal on a case-by-case basis. It was established to help former members of the Royal Navy on low incomes to continue their studies.
Who can apply
- Military background: You are a former member of the Royal Navy, regardless of whether you are a man or a woman.
- Course: You have been admitted to the Master’s programme in ‘International Maritime Policy’ or to an MPhil programme (research-based Master’s) on the topic of improving maritime shipping.
- Research topic: For the MPhil, your dissertation must contribute to understanding or improving navigation, and you will not progress to a PhD programme.
- Study mode: You can study full-time or part-time.
- Financial need: You can provide evidence of a low household income.
- Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
- Priority: If you have been discharged from service due to a wound, injury or illness, you are given priority.
How realistic are your chances?
This scholarship is aimed at a very small target group. You must be a former member of the Royal Navy on a low income and be enrolled on one of two specific degree programmes at Greenwich, meaning that very few people meet the criteria. If you meet these criteria – and particularly if you were discharged from service due to a service-related injury – your chances are good, as the pool of eligible candidates is so small. Please note: the scholarship has not been listed on the university’s current funding pages in recent years; therefore, please check that it is still available before relying on it.
