Henri Frankfort Fellowship

During your research visit to London for two months, you will receive approximately EUR 1,580 per month to cover living and accommodation costs. A fellowship is a funded research stay. It is awarded by the Warburg Institute, which is part of the University of London and is a research centre for the history of ideas, visual history and cultural history. The Institute established this fellowship in memory of Henri Frankfort, who directed it from 1949 to 1954, and uses it to support research in the fields he explored.

Who can apply

• Level: You have already completed your PhD and are working as a postdoctoral researcher.
• Field of study: Your research focuses on the history of ideas, cultural history or art history of the Ancient Near East. This encompasses society, art, architecture, religion, philosophy and science in Mesopotamia and Egypt, as well as the links between these cultures and the civilisations of the Aegean and later civilisations.
• Where you work: You are conducting research at the Warburg Institute in London and making use of its library, photo collection and archive.
• Nationality: Open to applicants of all nationalities.
• Note: The prize is intended solely to fund research projects, not archaeological excavations.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the University of London’s online scholarship portal. The application deadline is 28 November. You will be offered a position at the Institute. You may be asked to give a seminar on your current research, and you will be required to write a post for the Institute’s blog.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a highly specialised academic award. You need a PhD and a research project that clearly focuses on the intellectual and cultural history of the Ancient Near East, which keeps the pool of applicants small. If your work truly fits within this field and draws on the Warburg Institute’s collections, your chances are good. A single prestigious institution attracts high-calibre applicants, so a well-targeted research proposal that makes use of the Institute’s resources will set you apart from the crowd.
