John Hughes Scholarship at Bangor University

During your first year of study at Bangor University in Wales, you will receive a one-off payment of about 1,730 EUR (£1,500). The money will be paid out at the end of November following your enrolment. This grant comes from Bangor University’s scholarship programme for first-year students, which was established in 1906 under the will of John Hughes from Liverpool. It is one of several named grants for students from North Wales.

Who can apply

• Where you're from: You were born in, or live in, the counties of Anglesey, Conwy or Gwynedd in North Wales.
• Residence: You live in the United Kingdom or have residence status in the United Kingdom for fee purposes.
• Prior study: You have completed your education up to level 3, for example the Abitur or an equivalent qualification.
• Degree: You are applying for a Bachelor’s degree programme or a degree programme with a foundation year at Bangor University.
• Firm choice: You list Bangor as your first choice on UCAS and then enrol there.
• Field of study: Anyone can apply.
• Nationality: Applicants of any nationality may apply, provided they meet the requirements regarding residence in the United Kingdom and North Wales.

How to apply

Please complete the application form for the admission scholarships. The application deadline for the start of studies on 2026 is 30. You will then sit a written entrance examination at your own school or university on 11. You will choose a subject from a list of around 25 subjects; you should therefore select a subject that is closely related to your intended degree programme. The results will be announced by email in March.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very narrowly defined. You must be from Anglesey, Conwy or Gwynedd, meet the UK’s residency requirements and be enrolled at Bangor University; consequently, the pool of eligible applicants is small. The scholarship is awarded to the applicant with the highest examination result and may not be awarded every year. If you clearly meet the criteria for North Wales and are preparing for an examination in a subject in which you excel, your chances are good.
