What you get

You receive a Training Grant of at least £5,000 per academic year (about 5,900 EUR). You never have to pay it back, and you can still take out a student loan on top. The grant helps with your living costs while you study the full-time MSc Nursing (Adult) at the University of Hertfordshire. The course runs for 24 months and qualifies you as a registered adult nurse. The fund is run by the NHS Business Services Authority, not the university.

You can also make several additional one-off payments:

• A supplement of £1,000 (approximately 1,180 EUR) if your degree programme is in a subject area facing a shortage of skilled workers.
• Up to £2,000 per year (approximately 2,360 EUR) as a contribution towards childcare costs, provided you have at least one child under the age of 15.
• Reimbursement of travel and accommodation costs for clinical placements.
• Up to £3,000 (approximately 3,540 EUR) from a special relief fund, should you find yourself in unexpected financial difficulty.

You must renew the grant every academic year.

Who can apply

• Course: You are studying for a Master’s degree in ‘Nursing (Adult)’ at the University of Hertfordshire.
• Actively studying: You are currently attending a lecture or on a clinical placement.
• Student finance: You are eligible for financial support towards your tuition fees and living costs from Student Finance England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. This applies even if you have not yet taken out a loan.
• Not on an NHS Bursary: You cannot apply for this grant if you are already receiving the older NHS grant.
• Nationality: Applicants of any nationality may apply, provided they meet the above-mentioned requirements regarding funding for their studies.

How to apply

Register online for an NHS LSF account and apply for the training grant there. Submit your application within six months of the start of your academic year and renew your application each academic year.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not a merit-based grant, but an entitlement. If you are enrolled on an eligible degree programme and meet the eligibility criteria for student finance, you will receive the education grant. There is no selection panel that you need to impress. The biggest risk is missing the six-month deadline or forgetting to renew the grant each year. You should therefore apply for it early on, as soon as your studies begin.
