The Thomas Beecham Scholarship

You will receive £160 per year (about 185 EUR) as a grant towards the cost of instrumental tuition whilst you are studying music. The grant is awarded by the Department of Music at the University of Bristol. You will receive it for the first time at the end of your first year of study. It will then be renewed for a further two years, provided your academic performance remains satisfactory, with the final payment being made after you graduate. It may therefore be awarded for up to three years in total.

Who can apply

• University: You’re studying at the University of Bristol.
• Degree: You are enrolled on a single- or double-degree programme with Music as your main subject.
• Year: You are in your first year of study. The decision on whether to award the prize is based on your exam results in your first year.
• Instrument: You are an outstanding orchestral musician. In exceptional cases, other instrumentalists may also be considered.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

No separate application is required. The scholarship will be awarded to you automatically on the basis of your exam results in your first year of study.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is given to only a select few. You must be in your first year of a music degree in Bristol and have distinguished yourself as an orchestral musician, meaning only a small group of students are eligible. There is no separate application process; what counts are your performance in the first-year exam and your playing. If you are among the best musicians in your year group, your chances are good.
