William S. Phillips Fund award

You will receive tuition fees paid in full for one year as well as a tax-free grant of about 7,000 EUR (GBP 6,000). The grant will be paid in two instalments over the course of the year, each time after you have demonstrated that you are achieving good academic results. The funding covers the entire duration of a one-year Master’s programme. It is provided by a foundation established from the estate of William Sangster Phillips, a Dundee-born benefactor, and funds postgraduate study in art and design at the University of Dundee’s College of Art and Design (Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design).

Who can apply

• Degree you take: You are applying for a one-year Master’s degree programme in an art or design subject at the University of Dundee.
• Full-time only: You are a full-time student.
• Subject range: Any field of art and design is eligible, from traditional techniques to new media and experimental methods.
• Your prior grades: You must hold at least a 2.1 honours degree, i.e. a British bachelor’s degree awarded with an ‘Upper Second’ grade.
• Home student status: You are a UK home student, i.e. you hold British nationality or ‘Settled Status’.
• Local link (bonus): A connection to Dundee is helpful, but not essential.

How to apply

Please complete the fund’s application form and send it to the art college by 31 July. Applications will be assessed on their merit. If you are shortlisted, you may be invited to an interview.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very narrowly targeted: only home students who are starting a one-year Master’s degree in art or design at this particular Scottish university are eligible to apply, so the pool of applicants is small. If you hold a degree with a grade of 2.1 or higher and can present compelling creative work, your chances are good, particularly if you have a connection to Dundee. As a single, generously funded scholarship covering both tuition fees and a living allowance, it rewards a clear, high-quality portfolio.
