What the Marie Andeßner Prize gives you

For a particularly innovative undergraduate or Master’s thesis, you will receive a one-off award of 800 EUR. Two prizes are awarded each year. The prize is awarded by the University of Salzburg, which administers it through its equality offices in order to raise the profile of outstanding research achievements by women. It is named after Marie Andeßner (1883-1906), a travel writer from Salzburg who travelled alone around the world around the year 1900.

Who can apply

• Women only: The prize is aimed at female students and female graduates.
• University: You are studying or have studied at the University of Salzburg (Paris-Lodron University of Salzburg).
• Field of study: Your final thesis will be written within the Faculty of Digital and Analytical Sciences (e.g. Mathematics, Computer Science) or the Faculty of Natural and Life Sciences (e.g. Biology, Geology, Psychology).
• Degree: You have submitted a diploma or master's thesis.
• Grade: Your final dissertation was awarded a ‘Very Good’ (the highest mark).
• Timing: For the 2026 round, your dissertation must have been approved in 2024 or 2025.
• Nationality: Open to all nationalities.

How to apply

Please submit your complete application as a PDF file by email by 2 February 2026. A panel of academics from all faculties will assess the theses. The Rector’s Office will announce the winners by the end of June, and the awards ceremony will take place on 2 June 2026.

How realistic are your chances?

The selection criteria for this prize are very strict: you must be a woman who has submitted a final thesis, awarded the highest mark, in specific scientific disciplines at a university, and have done so within a two-year period. This keeps the pool of candidates small. If you clearly meet these criteria and your work is interdisciplinary, of international relevance or of benefit to society, your chances are good. Nevertheless, only two prizes are awarded each year.
