About this scholarship

Fohn Foundation art scholarship

You will receive a one-off grant of up to 3,000 EUR for a period of 12 months. Each year, the Foundation awards up to 10 grants from a total budget of 20,000 euros. A jury determines the exact amount of your grant, so it may be less than the maximum amount. The Emanuel and Sofie Fohn Foundation is administered by the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. It supports students of art and art history, as well as graduates, particularly in relation to challenging projects, postgraduate courses, seminars or other further education programmes in Austria or abroad.

Who can apply

  • Field of study: You are studying, or have studied, Fine Art, Art History or another artistic subject.
  • Level: You are currently enrolled or have completed your Bachelor’s, Master’s or Diploma degree within the last two years.
  • Institution: You are currently studying, or have studied, at a university, a university of applied sciences or an art college. This does not necessarily have to be in Austria.
  • Nationality: You are an Austrian citizen, come from South Tyrol, or are an Italian whose mother tongue is German.
  • Talent: You have an excellent track record and are able to demonstrate your skills. For the Fine Art programme, please submit a portfolio containing your five most important works. For the Art History programme, please submit any published texts.
  • New applicant: You have not yet received this scholarship.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts’ application system. You will need to register and upload your documents as PDF files. The application deadline is 19 November. A panel of experts in art and art history will then make a decision based on your application documents. There will be no interview.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is very narrowly defined. You must be active in the arts. Furthermore, you must be an Austrian citizen or a German-speaking applicant from South Tyrol or Italy. This means that the pool of applicants remains small. With up to 10 grants awarded each year, a suitable applicant with a compelling portfolio or a compelling sample of their work has good prospects. The jury assesses the quality of your work exclusively; therefore, a compelling submission is of the utmost importance.
