What the Thyl-Dürr award gives you

During your music studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (mdw), you will receive 430 EUR per month, paid 12 times a year for one year (a total of approximately 5,160 EUR). You will also receive professional artist photographs and support in drafting your CV, both in a short tabular format and in a detailed written version. The scholarship is awarded by the Swiss Dr Robert and Lina Thyll-Dürr Foundation. It is a one-off grant and cannot be renewed.

Who can apply

• University: You are studying at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna (mdw).
• Field of study: You are studying an instrument, singing (concert programme) or composition, or you are a PhD student in one of these disciplines.
• Degree phase: You are a full-time student or a PhD student. Preference will be given to students who are about to complete their degree.
• Grades: You have achieved outstanding results both academically and artistically.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

Please submit a written application to the office of the mdw Vice-Rector for Teaching. Please enclose a CV in table format, an audio recording of your performance (a demo or a piece) and a description of your financial situation. The application deadline is 17 December. The Foundation will carry out a preliminary selection, and the shortlisted candidates will then perform before a jury in the Haydnsaal, which will decide on the award of the prize.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is strictly limited: only the best music students at a Viennese university are eligible to apply, and the winner is selected on the basis of a live audition before a jury. This keeps the pool of applicants small, but the bar is set high, as applicants must demonstrate outstanding achievements and provide a convincing recorded audition. If you are an outstanding instrumentalist, singer or composer and are about to complete your degree at the mdw, you have a realistic chance of winning.
