WU Vienna need-based scholarship

You will receive a one-off payment of at least 750 EUR to cover the additional costs of writing your Master’s thesis or doctoral thesis. The exact amount is based on the cost breakdown you have submitted, minus any other funding you are already receiving. This funding is intended to cover research costs such as travel expenses for a research stay abroad, extensive literature reviews and empirical work such as surveys or field studies. The grant is administered by the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU Vienna) under the Austrian Student Finance Act. It does not cover living costs, printing, binding or photocopying costs for your thesis, nor does it cover general purchases such as a computer or paper.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are enrolled on a degree programme at WU Vienna.
• Study phase: You are currently writing your Master’s thesis or your PhD thesis.
• Field of study: Every subject taught at WU.
• Grades and progress: Master’s students must have obtained at least 45 ECTS credits with a grade point average of 2.0 or higher. Doctoral and PhD students must have earned between 18 and 30 ECTS credits (depending on the programme) with a grade point average of 1.5 or higher. Elective modules and the research project are not counted towards this requirement.
• Timing: You are still within your eligibility period. This corresponds to the standard duration of your degree programme plus one additional semester (4+1 for most Master’s programmes, 5+1 for the ‘Business Education’ programme, 6+1 for doctoral and PhD programmes). An extension may be granted for reasons such as illness, pregnancy, disability or military service, amongst others.
• Nationality: You are eligible to apply if you are a national of Austria or another EEA country, including Switzerland. Nationals of other countries are eligible to apply if they hold a long-term EU residence permit or have lived in Austria with a parent for at least 5 years prior to the start of their studies. Recognised refugees are also eligible to apply.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted by email to the WU Admissions Office. Please attach the application form, your academic transcript, a description of your final thesis, a budget breakdown and a report from your supervisor. There are two application deadlines each year: from 13 to 24 April and from 5 to 16 October. WU will notify you of the outcome by email.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is aimed at a select group of applicants. You must be enrolled at WU, already be working on your final thesis, meet the requirements regarding grades and academic progress, and provide evidence of specific research costs. This keeps the pool of applicants small. If you clearly meet the eligibility criteria and submit a well-documented budget supported by your supervisor, your chances are good. Please note that funding is limited and there is no legal entitlement to this grant.
