About this scholarship

What the Marietta Blau-Grant for Jerusalem gives you

You get a monthly research grant for a full academic year at the Center for Austrian Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel. The money is paid monthly in advance and helps you move your doctoral dissertation forward. The grant comes from the OeAD, Austria's agency for education and internationalisation, funded by the Austrian science ministry. This is a partial grant. It does not cover accommodation or insurance, and there is no separate travel allowance, so you pay those costs yourself (travel and health insurance is recommended). You cannot work for pay during the grant or combine it with an Erasmus grant.

Who can apply

  • Degree level: You are a doctoral (PhD) student working on your dissertation.
  • University: You are enrolled at an Austrian university.
  • Field of study: Your dissertation is in the social sciences, humanities, law or European studies, with a link to Austria or Central Europe (for example its history, culture, the Habsburg heritage, or Vienna).
  • Timing: You finish the stay before you submit your dissertation.
  • Language: You can write your application in English.
  • Age: No age limit.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply, as long as you study at an Austrian university.

How to apply

You apply online through the OeAD's grants.at database, in English. The deadline for the 2026/27 cycle is 1 February 2026.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is cut narrowly. You need to be a doctoral student at an Austrian university whose dissertation fits Austrian or Central European studies and who wants to work at the Jerusalem centre. That keeps the applicant pool small. If your research clearly matches that focus and you apply by the deadline, your prospects are good.
