GO.INVESTIGATIO grant of the Austrian Academy of Sciences

You receive 1,750 EUR per month for a research stay abroad lasting between 1 and 9 months. The money funds library, archive or field research outside Austria. You can use it to write a paper or publication, or to prepare an application for further external funding. The grant comes from the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW), funded by Austria's Federal Ministry for Women, Science and Research. If you base your stay at one of the ÖAW offices in Athens, Rome or Cairo, those institutes also give you free accommodation and local support. The grant does not cover courses, workshops or conferences.

Who can apply

• Field: You work in the humanities or cultural studies.
• Your position: You are doing a doctorate (PhD), or you work as a researcher at a university or research institution in Austria.
• Recent degree: You finished your most recent degree (Master's or doctorate) no more than five years ago.
• Concrete project: You have a specific project that you cannot carry out in Austria and that needs a stay abroad.
• Where you go: Any destination outside Austria works. A stay at the ÖAW offices in Athens, Rome or Cairo gets priority.

How to apply

You apply through the online form on the ÖAW grants portal, in German or English, by 10 December 2026. The form opens on 10 November 2026. External experts review your academic record, the quality of your project and how much you really need the stay abroad. A decision takes about three months.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is cut narrowly. You must be an early-career humanities researcher based in Austria with a concrete project you cannot do at home, so the eligible pool is small. If you fit and can show in your proposal why the sources or materials are only reachable abroad, your prospects are solid. Basing your stay at the Athens, Rome or Cairo offices gives you an extra edge in the ranking.
