Prix Hungarica

You are awarded the 4,000 EUR Prize for the best doctoral thesis on Hungary and its place in Europe, which is awarded once a year. The jury may also award a second prize of 2,000 EUR for an outstanding Master’s thesis 2. The topic may be drawn from the humanities, the arts, economics, law or the social sciences, provided it deals with Hungary and its European context. A comparative approach is welcome. The prize is awarded by the Association of Friends of Hungarian Culture (AACH) in Paris, with the support of Forvis Mazars, and is presented during a ceremony at the Hungarian Embassy.

Who can apply

• Degree: You have finished a PhD thesis. For the second prize, you need a non-professional Master 2 dissertation graded "mention bien" (good) or higher.
• Language: You have written and defended your final thesis or dissertation in French.
• Topic: Your research is about Hungary and its place in Europe.
• Field: Humanities, Arts, Economics, Law or Social Sciences.
• Timing: It has been less than 5 years since you completed your PhD. For the 2026/2027 round, you defended your doctoral thesis between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2026.
• University: You may be coming from a French university or any university abroad.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

Please send your final thesis or dissertation, your degree certificate and the reports from your defence, a letter of motivation and a CV including a list of your publications to the association’s coordinator in Paris. You may submit the documents in paper form or as digital files. The application deadline for the 2026/2027 round is 11 January 2027 at 23:59. It would be helpful if you could give advance notice of your application by email.

How realistic are your chances?

This prize has very narrow criteria. Your research must focus on Hungary and be written in French, which means the pool of applicants is small. However, as only one main prize is awarded each year, competition amongst those who qualify is fierce. If your doctoral thesis clearly fits the theme and you have successfully defended it within the last five years, you are a serious contender. A well-researched, thoroughly documented thesis on Hungary is the key to success here.
