About this award / prize

Humblet Foundation higher-education awards

You can win a one-off cash prize for an academic paper on the Wallonia region in Belgium. Two prizes will be awarded. The thesis prize (Prix de Thèse) of 3,000 EUR goes to a doctoral thesis submitted within the five years prior to the award ceremony. The dissertation prize (Prix de Mémoire) of 1,000 EUR is awarded to a university dissertation submitted within the last two years. The prize money is provided by the Fondation Wallonne Pierre-Marie et Jean-François Humblet, a foundation based in Louvain-la-Neuve which promotes knowledge about Wallonia. The jury may also decide not to award a prize or to divide a prize amongst several winners.

Who can apply

  • Your work: You have written a final-year dissertation or a doctoral thesis that makes a significant contribution to the state of knowledge or to the development of Wallonia.
  • Language: You wrote the work in French.
  • Field of study: Any topic is permitted, whether from the humanities or the natural sciences, provided that the connection to Wallonia is clearly evident.
  • Age: At the time of applying, you are 40 years old or younger.
  • Who you are: You are applying as an individual or as a team, not as an organisation. Applicants of all nationalities are welcome.
  • Not already rewarded: Your work has not yet won a prize of equal or greater value, and you have not yet won this prize.

How to apply

Please send a copy of your work, together with a one-page cover letter explaining how it contributes to Wallonia, to the Foundation in Louvain-la-Neuve by 30 October. A jury comprising four Walloon academics from various disciplines will then assess the submitted entries. The winners will be announced at a public session.
