About this scholarship

What the fellowship gives you

A scholarship is a funded training place. You will receive a scholarship of up to 12 months for a one-year specialist medical training programme at the Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain) in Belgium. The scholarship also covers a return flight between the international airport nearest to your place of residence and Brussels Airport. The monthly amount is not disclosed. You will be informed of the exact amount in your award letter. UCLouvain runs the programme to train specialist doctors from developing countries and to establish links with universities and hospitals in those countries.

Two training pathways are available. If you have already started your specialist training in your home country, you will enrol on the one-year programme (MSP 9 CE). If you are already recognised as a specialist in your home country, you will complete an additional year of training (MSC 9 CE).

Who can apply

  • Who you are: You are a qualified medical doctor.
  • Nationality: You are a national of a developing country listed on the OECD list (many countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East).
  • Home institution link: You are enrolled at a partner university in your home country. For the MSP programme, collaboration with a university under a tripartite agreement is required; for the MSC programme, collaboration with a hospital is required.
  • Admission: You meet the entry requirements for MSP 9 CE or MSC 9 CE. You also have the agreement of the relevant specialty Master's President, which you get by sending your CV and a motivation letter.
  • French: You can demonstrate that you speak French, as the training is conducted in French.
  • No prior return obligation: You are not obliged to return to your home country as part of a previous scholarship.
  • Not already settled in the EU: You cannot apply if you already have the status of a Belgian student within the EU on the basis of a residence permit or social entitlements.

How to apply

First, please complete an online form to check your eligibility. You will then receive the full application form by email and should return it together with the required documents. The deadline is 8 January at 12:00 (Brussels time) and is binding. The International Action Council at UCLouvain will select the scholarship recipients and announce the results around mid-March.
