About this scholarship
Benefit
You get a 7,000 EUR allowance, paid in three instalments, plus free accommodation for one academic year. You live in a single room, with a shared living room, lounge and kitchen, at the Collegio dei Fiamminghi guest house in the centre of Bologna, Italy. The stay runs from September or October until the end of July. A half-year stay (one semester) is also possible, with an allowance of 3,500 EUR. The Collegio is a 17th-century institution that hosts young academics from Belgium and the Netherlands who study or research at the University of Bologna. Two grants are awarded each year.
Eligibility
- Level: You are a PhD student, postdoctoral researcher or at an advanced stage of your Master’s degree (preferably a two-year research-based Master’s programme).
- University: You are enrolled at a Flemish university, a French-speaking Belgian university or Utrecht University.
- Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are studying at one of these universities.
- Field of study: Any topic relevant to the University of Bologna. The humanities are preferred, but other subject areas are also welcome.
- Language: Your Italian is more than adequate for the work you’re planning to do.
- Link to Bologna: You should identify a contact person at the University of Bologna in advance. For a research visit, you will need a letter of invitation from a supervisor there.
- No double funding: This grant cannot be combined with other scholarships, and you must waive your right to an Erasmus+ grant for the same period.
How to apply
Applications must be submitted via your own university, not directly to the Collegio. Flemish students should apply via their university and VLIR; French-speaking Belgian students via CRef; and students from Utrecht by email to erasmus@uu.nl. You must submit a study or research plan, a personal statement, your CV, a transcript, letters of recommendation and proof of your Italian language proficiency. The application deadlines are in the spring (Utrecht: 25 May 2026). The Collegio will select the two successful candidates by the end of July.
