About this scholarship

Fulbright Graduate Studies Award

You will receive a scholarship of up to 29,000 USD (about 26,680 EUR) for a Master’s degree, a PhD or pre-doctoral research at an accredited university in the United States for a period of up to 9 months. In addition to the scholarship, you will receive a lump-sum travel allowance of 1,000 USD (approx. 920 EUR), health insurance and support with applying for the J-1 exchange visa. You will receive support with your preparations before your departure. Upon your arrival in the USA, you will take part in induction sessions and seminars with a local adviser. You will also gain lifelong access to the Fulbright Alumni Network, the community of former scholarship holders. You may only receive this scholarship once. It is awarded by the Fulbright Commission in Brussels, which organises educational exchanges between the United States, Belgium and Luxembourg.

Who can apply

  • Nationality: You are a citizen of Belgium or Luxembourg. This is determined by your passport, not by your place of residence.
  • Degree: You already hold at least a bachelor’s degree.
  • Where you study: You are attending a US university accredited by the CHEA or the US Department of Education. You apply for admission there yourself, independently of this scholarship.
  • Field of study: Any academic field, with the exception of a medical degree or specialist training in the USA.
  • Study type: You are enrolling on a 1- or 2-year Master’s programme, a PhD programme or a preliminary research project as part of an ongoing PhD. Part-time programmes and short exchange semesters are not taken into account.
  • English: You can demonstrate that you have a good command of English. No TOEFL or GRE results are required.
  • Grades: You have an excellent academic record or a strong personal or professional background.
  • Where you live: You live outside the United States when you apply. You cannot apply if you are a US citizen, hold dual US/Belgian or US/Luxembourgish nationality, or have a green card. You are also excluded if you spent 5 or more of the last 6 years in the US. Applicants with little recent US experience are preferred.

How to apply

You must submit a complete online application in English via the Fulbright/IIE platform by 1 December at 12:00 midday (CET). For a programme starting in 2027–28, the application deadline is 1 December 2026. You may submit your letter of acceptance from a US university at a later date, by April at the latest. The most suitable candidates will then be invited to a compulsory interview in English.
