About this scholarship

Benefit

This scholarship (a funded research post) enables you to work part-time on your PhD whilst continuing your clinical specialist training. You will retain your full hospital salary. The F.R.S.-FNRS will reimburse your university for the clinical hours that you spend on research instead. The annual reimbursement is capped at 58,700 EUR for a temporary veterinary surgeon and 77,400 EUR for a permanent veterinary surgeon. The grant runs for 2 years on a part-time basis. You may renew it once, bringing the total duration to up to 4 years. The F.R.S.-FNRS is the leading research funding organisation in the French-speaking part of Belgium (Wallonia-Brussels Federation).

Eligibility

  • Degree: You have a degree in veterinary medicine.
  • Specialisation training: You have spent at least 2 years in a residency programme (including internship) approved by the European Board of Veterinary Specialisation.
  • Where you study: You are undertaking your PhD at a university in the French-speaking part of Belgium: the Université Libre de Bruxelles, the Université Catholique de Louvain or the Université de Liège. You must also enrol at the relevant doctoral school for veterinary sciences.
  • Age: You are under 35 on the application deadline.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
  • Language: You may write your research proposal in French or English.

How to apply

You apply online through the F.R.S.-FNRS e-space portal. The call opens on 10 December 2025. You must validate your application by 17 February 2026 at 2 p.m. Brussels time. Two external experts assess your project, your faculty ranks the applications, and the Board of Trustees decides in June 2026. Fellowships start on 1 October 2026.
