About this scholarship

What the New Carlsberg Foundation funds

The New Carlsberg Foundation (Ny Carlsbergfondet) gives project-based grants for art in Denmark. There is no fixed amount or duration. The board looks at each application on its own and decides how much to award. In 2022 the foundation gave out around DKK 195 million (about EUR 26 million) in total. It is a private, independent Danish foundation set up in 1902 by brewer Carl Jacobsen and his wife Ottilia. It supports the visual arts broadly, including applied art, architecture and landscape design.

You can apply for funding in several different areas, each of which has its own deadlines:

  • Art research: fellowships (funded research positions) for PhD, postdoc or individual research projects lasting 3 to 12 months. For researchers who do not hold a post with significant research duties.
  • Exhibitions: Costs for exhibitions in museums, art centres and non-commercial exhibition venues.
  • Publications: Books, magazines and academic publications on Danish art.
  • Research and study trips: Trips abroad and conferences for art historians, as well as joint study trips for students at Danish art academies.
  • Art for museums and public art: The acquisition of works of art for museums or the creation of permanent works of art for local authorities, hospitals and schools.
  • Other art projects: Original projects that are in line with the Foundation’s objectives but do not fall within the other categories. Please contact the secretariat before submitting your application.

Who can apply

  • Who you are: This depends on the funding area. Individuals, groups and associations may apply, as may museums, arts centres, publishers, businesses and public or private organisations.
  • Your field: Your project focuses on the visual arts, which in this context also include the applied arts, architecture and landscape design.
  • Link to Denmark: Your project supports the arts in Denmark, for example a Danish museum, a Danish art academy or a publication on Danish art.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
  • For art research grants: You are a researcher without a job that already includes significant research duties.

How to apply

You create a profile in the Foundation’s online application system. You then complete the form and upload a project description and a financial plan. There are specific deadlines for each funding area throughout the year; please therefore check which deadline applies to your project. The Board reviews applications approximately every four weeks and responds via the system.
