About this scholarship

Benefit

You will receive a one-off grant of up to DKK 50,000 (about 6,700 EUR), which usually starts at around DKK 20,000 (approx. 2,700 EUR). These funds are used to support basic medical research. This involves investigating, at a fundamental level, how the body functions and how diseases develop. Each year, the focus rotates between three areas: immunology (how the immune system works), viral diseases and cell research. The grant can cover running costs such as equipment, the payment of student assistants, as well as research trips or stays abroad. It is rarely used to fund salaries. The scholarship is provided by a Danish foundation established in memory of the former director Leo Nielsen and his wife Karen Margrethe Nielsen.

Eligibility

  • Level: You are a master's or doctoral student, or a younger researcher, working in medicine or natural sciences.
  • Field: Your field of work is basic medical research. Preference is given to the fields of immunology, viral diseases and cell research.
  • Age: To take part in research trips and stays abroad, you must be 35 or younger.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
  • Where you study: Any university. The scholarship can also be used to fund research stays abroad.

How to apply

Please send your application by post to the Foundation’s administrative office in Copenhagen. Please enclose a covering letter, your CV and a list of publications. The application deadline is 31 December each year. If this date falls on a weekend, you have until the first Monday thereafter. Applications are assessed on the basis of academic merit.
