About this grant / loan
UPC Alumni Loans at a glance
You can borrow up to 5,000 EUR to fund your studies or the writing of your dissertation abroad – completely interest-free. This is a loan, not a grant, so you will need to repay it, but the repayment terms are generous. Repayment begins no later than the second year after you complete your studies. You can pay in monthly instalments or as a lump sum, and you may repay the loan early. Each person may take out this loan once. The funds cover costs associated with your stay abroad, such as tuition fees, accommodation and travel. The loan is administered by UPC Alumni in conjunction with the Social Council of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) in Barcelona and is funded by donations from former students and companies.
Who can apply
- University: You are currently a Bachelor’s or Master’s student at one of UPC’s own campuses in Barcelona.
- Where you go: You’d like to take part in an Erasmus exchange or write your final-year dissertation (TFG/TFM) abroad. Students at the UPC’s interdisciplinary CFIS centre can also use the loan to fund their studies there.
- Field of study: Open to all disciplines.
- Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
- Financial need: You are unable to pay for your stay yourself. Your family’s income will be taken into account in the assessment.
- Grades: You have very good marks. During the selection process, your marks and your financial situation are given equal consideration.
How to apply
Applications must be submitted online via the UPC Electronic Office. For the 2025-2026 round, you can apply from 17 March to 15 April. A selection panel will assess the applications and make a decision within one month of the application deadline. Applicants will be ranked according to their academic achievements and financial needs.
How realistic are your chances?
This loan is strictly limited: only active UPC students who are going abroad are eligible to apply, and the total amount is capped at 70,000 EUR per year. In the 2024–2025 round, 19 out of 23 applicants were awarded a loan, meaning that most of those who apply and meet the criteria are successful. If you clearly meet the eligibility criteria and can demonstrate a genuine financial need, your chances are good.
