About this scholarship
What you get
You will be offered a paid 18-month internship at the Spanish news agency Agencia EFE, as well as a monthly stipend, the amount of which increases if you go abroad. For the first nine months (November 2025 to July 2026), you will work in EFE’s regional offices across Spain and receive 650 EUR per month. During the following nine months (November 2026 to July 2027), you will move to one of EFE’s international branches in Europe, Latin America, North America, Africa or Asia and receive 1,500 EUR per month. You will also receive a travel allowance of 500 EUR for a placement in Europe or 1,000 EUR for all other countries, travel insurance and a place on the ‘Periodismo Transmedia’ Master’s programme at the UNED, which is run in partnership with EFE. The programme is funded by the “la Caixa” Foundation in partnership with Agencia EFE, and 12 scholarships are awarded per round.
Who can apply
- Degree: You are in the final year of your Bachelor’s degree (Grado) in journalism or audiovisual communication.
- University: You’re studying at a Spanish university.
- Credits left: At the time of your application, you must still earn at least 30 ECTS credits.
- Nationality: You hold Spanish nationality.
- Grades: You have a strong academic record.
- Languages: You speak Spanish very well, as well as the second official language of the region where you will be based. For international assignments, you will also need a good command of English.
- No double funding: You may not receive any other scholarship or funding from another organisation during the funding period. Study grants from the Ministry are permitted.
How to apply
You should submit the application form and supporting documents to the Fundación “la Caixa”. For the 2025 round, the application window was open from 1 to 21 September and is now closed. Shortlisted applicants will sit a written test. Those who pass this will be invited to a face-to-face interview before the final scholarship recipients are announced.
How realistic are your chances?
This award is highly selective: only final-year students studying journalism (Spanish) and audiovisual communication with outstanding grades and good language skills are eligible, and only 12 places are awarded per round. If you clearly meet these requirements, the pool of eligible applicants is small, but the selection process is nevertheless highly competitive due to the written exam and the interview. It is outstanding academic performance and a sound command of the language that set applicants apart from the rest.
