About this award / prize

Don Julián Sánchez "El Charro" Research Award

You will receive 1,266 EUR plus a diploma if your research paper wins first prize. A second paper may be awarded a consolation prize (accésit) of 506 EUR plus a diploma. Spanish income tax will be deducted from both amounts. The City Council of Ciudad Rodrigo (Salamanca) awards the prize for original research projects on the town and its surrounding area (Comarca). This is a one-off prize, not a recurring scholarship. This is the 42 edition. The jury may decide not to award a prize if no entry is deemed good enough.

Who can apply

  • Who you are: All researchers, regardless of their nationality, who are at least 18 years old.
  • Your work: You must submit an original, previously unpublished study. This must not have been awarded a prize or submitted to any other competition or journal.
  • Topic: Your research contributes to our understanding of Ciudad Rodrigo and its comarca (the surrounding region in the province of Salamanca).
  • Language: You write in Spanish, with a summary and keywords also in English.
  • Length: At least 90 pages.
  • Field of study: Any subject, as long as it relates to Ciudad Rodrigo and its region.

How to apply

Please submit your bound entry (two printed copies and a Word file) to the City Council’s administrative office or post it there, clearly marked with the name of the prize. The closing date for entries is 25 November 2026 at 14:00. You will remain anonymous under a pseudonym of your choice; please enclose your personal details in a separate, sealed envelope. The jury will announce its decision on 19 January 2027.

How realistic are your chances?

This prize has very strict criteria. Your work must focus on a specific town and region, be written in Spanish and comprise at least 90 pages, meaning that only a few complete studies are in contention in each round. If you submit a well-researched, original piece of research on Ciudad Rodrigo, your chances are good. However, as the jury may decide not to award the prize, the quality standards are very high.
