What the CFIS Residence Grant covers

Whilst studying at the Interdisciplinary University Centre (CFIS) of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), part of your living costs in a student hall of residence in Barcelona will be covered. This applies to halls of residence with which the CFIS has entered into agreements. The grant may be awarded for the entire duration of your studies; however, annual renewal is not automatic: it depends on the criteria set by the CFIS Committee for Access, Monitoring and Assessment. The CFIS awards several such grants. The exact amount is not published. It varies from year to year depending on the funds the CFIS raises from partner companies and institutions, meaning that both the amount of the grant and the number of places available depend on the funds available in the respective year.

Who can apply

• Admission: You must be admitted to study at CFIS. The degree programmes are dual Bachelor’s programmes in mathematics, physics, computer science, data science and various engineering disciplines, lasting 4.5 to 5 years.
• Where you live: You are from outside Barcelona and do not normally live there. The scholarship is intended to help students who are moving to the city.
• Study stage: You may be a new student or already studying at CFIS.
• Nationality: All nationalities can apply.

How to apply

If you are a new student, please apply for the scholarship via the CFIS pre-registration form. It is not awarded automatically, and places are allocated according to your ranking in the admissions process. The admissions process comprises online registration in the spring and an entrance examination in mathematics and physics at the end of May or beginning of June. If you are already studying at CFIS, a call for applications to fill any places that have become available is published midway through the academic year.

How realistic are your chances?

One requirement rules out most applicants: you must first be admitted to the CFIS, which accepts around 40 students each year from over 200 applicants. Once you have been admitted and are coming from outside Barcelona, competition for the hall of residence grant is far less intense, although the number of places depends on the funding available each year. If you perform well in the admissions process and apply for the hall of residence grant on your pre-registration form, your chances are good.
