Emergency grant for Galician university students in financial trouble

You will receive a one-off payment between 1,750 EUR and 3,000 EUR. The exact amount depends on your family income. This is emergency financial assistance provided by the Xunta de Galicia, the regional government of Galicia in north-western Spain, for students who suddenly find themselves unable to afford to continue their studies and are at risk of having to drop out. The amount is paid as a one-off sum, not on a monthly basis. There is no fixed number of places, so anyone who meets the eligibility criteria can receive the grant.

Who can apply

• University: You are studying at a public university within the Galician higher education system (SUG).
• Degree level: You are enrolled on an official Bachelor’s degree programme.
• Course load: You have registered for at least 50 credit points this year. If you are about to graduate and have fewer than 50 credit points left to complete your degree, 30 credit points will suffice.
• Sudden hardship: A serious, unforeseen event during this academic year has meant that your family can no longer afford to fund your studies. Examples include: the loss of both parents; the loss of the main breadwinner due to unemployment, death, serious illness or permanent incapacity to work; the non-payment of maintenance following a separation or divorce; returning from abroad; or being a victim of gender-based violence or terrorism.
• Income limit: Your family’s per capita income must be less than the amount obtained by multiplying the annual non-contributory state pension by 1.80.
• First time: You have not yet received this grant.
• Field of study: All subjects are eligible.
• Nationality: Applicants of any nationality may apply, provided they are studying at a public university in Galicia.

How to apply

You should submit your application online via the Xunta de Galicia’s electronic portal (sede.xunta.gal), using procedure code ED433A. The deadline is 31 July. If your hardship arose before the annual call for applications was published, you will instead have one month from the date of publication to submit your application. Please check the current deadlines as soon as the call for applications is published.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is very strictly defined: you must be studying at a public university in Galicia and provide evidence that you are facing a specific, sudden financial hardship this year, meaning that only a small number of students meet the criteria. As this is not a competitive selection process, anyone who meets the conditions and can provide evidence of the financial hardship can receive the grant without being assessed against others. If your case clearly meets the criteria and you provide the relevant evidence, your chances are good.
