What you get

You will receive a one-off grant of 4,000 EUR for one semester (approximately 5 months) at Boston University in the USA. Furthermore, you will not have to pay any tuition fees during your stay at Boston University. The programme is run by the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) for its own science students and offers 4 places each year. You will receive the grant in a single payment at the start of the semester, once you have provided proof that you have arrived at Boston University.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are enrolled on a bachelor’s degree programme (Grado) at the Faculty of Natural Sciences at UAM. Only students from this faculty may apply.
• Credits passed: You have earned at least 60 ECTS credits in your current degree programme.
• Credits left: You still have at least two-thirds of your semester’s workload ahead of you (at least 20 ECTS on a 240 ECTS degree programme), so there is still plenty of time for a period of study abroad.
• English: You must have at least B2 level English language skills, as evidenced by an official certificate such as TOEFL or IELTS.
• First time: You have not previously taken part in this programme or in the UAM exchange agreements, nor are you currently taking part in either of them.

How to apply

You apply online via the UAM’s Sigma student portal. You then submit the signed, printed application, together with the Boston University form, to the University’s Enrolment Office. The application period runs in October, roughly from 7 to 20. A selection panel assesses applicants primarily on the basis of their grade point average, as well as their academic profile and language skills.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is very restricted: only Bachelor’s students studying natural sciences at the UAM can apply, and there are only 4 places available. This keeps the pool of applicants small, but as grades are the deciding factor, a good grade point average is what will set you apart from the rest. If you clearly meet the requirements regarding credit points and English language proficiency and can demonstrate good grades, your chances are good.
