Social Emergency Grants at the University of Malaga

You will receive emergency funding if a sudden crisis jeopardises your studies. The support consists of four components, which you can combine. The study grant takes top priority and amounts to up to 1,000 EUR for engineering or architecture degree programmes, up to 800 euros for other Bachelor’s degree programmes and up to 600 euros for a Master’s degree programme. You can also receive support towards rent or temporary accommodation, canteen vouchers or a food allowance for up to one academic year, as well as other one-off emergency assistance payments. The committee determines the specific amounts on a case-by-case basis. A total budget of 50,000 EUR is available for the 2025/2026 call for applications, which will be paid out by the University of Málaga’s Social Services Office.

Who can apply

• University: You are enrolled at the University of Málaga on an official undergraduate (Grado) or postgraduate (Posgrado) degree programme in 2025/2026.
• Credits: You are enrolled for at least 30 ECTS credits. A lower number is permitted if this is sufficient to complete your degree, or if you have a recognised disability or special educational needs.
• Nationality: You are a Spanish national or an EU citizen. Students from non-EU countries must hold a valid Spanish residence permit or have a valid application for one pending.
• Field of study: Any subject can apply.
• No higher degree: You do not yet hold a qualification at the same level or a higher level than the one you are currently aiming for, and you are not yet in a position to obtain one.
• Sudden hardship: Your household income has fallen by at least 15% compared with the previous year due to an unforeseen event between 1 January 2024 and 30 September 2026. Examples: loss of employment of the main breadwinner, death, divorce, a newly acquired disability, serious illness, gender-based violence, asylum status or a natural disaster. Even extreme cases where the income is below 15% may be eligible.
• Income limit: Your family’s income falls below the income thresholds set by the Spanish Ministry of Education’s general scholarship programme.
• No double funding: You will not receive any further funding to cover the same tuition fees or living costs, including the Ministry’s general grant.

How to apply

You apply for the grant online using the University of Málaga’s form with your student login details and upload the documents supporting your circumstances. To apply for the tuition fee grant, you must submit your application by 31 January 2026. Should the crisis arise at a later date, you have until 30 April 2026. For accommodation, meals and other support, you can submit an application by 30 September 2026. A committee will then assess the applications based on the extent of the drop in income and the urgency of the need.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is intended exclusively for students from Málaga who are facing a proven, sudden emergency; consequently, the pool of eligible applicants is small. Grants are awarded on a needs-based basis, with priority given to those who have suffered the greatest loss of income and to particularly vulnerable cases. A clearly documented emergency offers a good chance of receiving funding from the designated fund totalling 50,000 EUR. Please apply for the grant immediately after the crisis arises, as funds are limited and applications are processed in the order in which they are received.
