Grants for doctoral dissertations at the University of Burgos

You will receive a grant of one-off payment of 500 EUR to cover the costs of completing and defending your doctoral thesis (your dissertation, the core research project for your doctoral degree) at the University of Burgos in Spain. The funding comes from the university’s own research programme, which is co-financed by Banco Santander. For the 2025 round, 33 grants and a total budget of 20,000 EUR are available.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are a PhD student at the University of Burgos.
• Timing: You will defend your dissertation in the year you apply.
• Fees paid: You are enrolled on the PhD programme and have paid all your tuition fees.
• Field of study: Anyone interested is welcome to apply.
• Nationality: All nationalities can apply.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the ‘Santander Open Academy’ platform or via the university’s online portal (Sede Electrónica). There is a separate application deadline for each annual call for applications. Following this, a selection process will determine who is awarded the scholarship.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is aimed at a narrowly defined group: exclusively PhD students at the University of Burgos who are due to defend their thesis in the relevant year. As there are 33 scholarships available and only a few people meet these criteria, your chances are good if you meet the requirements and apply in good time.
