University of Burgos - Grants for Bachelor´s Degree Students Undergoing Unforeseen Economic Hardship

Emergency hardship grant of the University of Burgos

You will receive up to 2,000 EUR as a one-off payment if a sudden financial hardship jeopardises your ability to continue your studies. Of this amount, up to 1,500 EUR may be used towards your tuition fees and enrolment fees. The amount will be paid in a single bank transfer and is exempt from Spanish income tax. The grant is funded by the Cátedra Francisco González Alonso, which has a total budget of 20,000 EUR per round. The aim is to ensure that no one at the university has to drop out of their studies for financial reasons.

Who can apply

• University: You are enrolled on a state-recognised Bachelor’s degree programme (Grado) at the University of Burgos this academic year.
• Sudden hardship: An unexpected event has caused you financial difficulties that are jeopardising your studies; for example, a death, a serious illness or a divorce in the family, or a loss of household income. You must be able to provide evidence of this.
• No double funding: You will not receive any further public or private funding for the same purpose.
• Grades: Unless you are a first-time first-year student, you passed a minimum share of last year's credits: 55% in sciences, engineering or technical fields, 70% in health sciences, and 80% in arts, humanities, social and legal sciences. The committee can waive this if the emergency itself caused you to fall behind.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. If you are not a Spanish national, you must provide evidence of any financial support you receive from the education authorities of another country.

How to apply

You apply online through the university's Secretaría Virtual and attach documents proving your income and the emergency. The application window runs to 30 April. A students' committee reviews the cases and gives priority to the most severe, documented hardship. The Rector issues the final decision.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very narrowly defined. You must already be studying at the University of Burgos and be able to provide evidence of a genuine, sudden financial hardship, which means that very few applicants apply for it. Selection is based on the severity of the proven hardship and not on your grades; therefore, what matters most is a clear, well-documented case. With a total budget of 20,000 EUR and a maximum of 2,000 EUR per student, urgent cases may also be decided under an accelerated procedure.
