Postgraduate Scholarships in Statistics (INE)

You will receive 958 EUR gross per month to undertake further training in statistical research methods at the Spanish National Institute of Statistics (INE). The scholarship is initially valid for up to 12 months. It may be extended in increments of 6 months up to a maximum of 24 months, subject to the availability of funding. The amount of the scholarship increases each year in line with salary increases in the public sector. For the 2026th round, the INE is awarding 18 scholarships. You will spend at least 30 hours per week at the INE headquarters in Madrid, where you will learn how statistical processes are structured and carried out. In some cases, remote working is possible. This is a training grant, not a job: you will not be given an employment contract, but the INE will insure you against accidents.

Who can apply

• Nationality: You are a national of Spain, another EU country or an EEA country (Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway).
• Residence: You’ll be living in Spain at the start of the scholarship.
• Degree: You must hold a bachelor’s degree from a university or be about to complete one. This must have been obtained within the three years prior to the publication of the call for applications. A degree obtained abroad must be officially recognised in Spain at the time the scholarship is awarded.
• Field of study: Any field of study is acceptable. As the programme focuses on statistical research, degrees relating to statistics are given the highest weighting.
• No earlier INE grant: You have not yet received an INE scholarship for the same purpose.
• No double funding: You are not currently receiving any other public or private funding for the same training course.
• Payments in order: You are up to date with your tax and social security payments.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the INE’s electronic portal. For the 2026 round, the application deadline runs from 9 to 29 January. Applications will be assessed on the basis of your degree, language skills, IT skills and relevant professional experience. The best applicants (twice the number of scholarship places available) will then be invited to an interview, which will play a key role in determining the final ranking.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is very narrowly defined. You must hold a recently obtained university degree, be resident in Spain and be interested in a career in statistical research. Consequently, the pool of eligible applicants is small, and there are 18 places available. Applicants with a degree in a statistics-related subject, good grades, language certificates and IT skills tend to fare best, and the interview can be the deciding factor. If you fit the profile and prepare well for the interview, your chances are good.
