About this scholarship

Research scholarships of the Fundación Canaria Doctor Manuel Morales

You will receive a monthly grant to cover your travel and living expenses whilst carrying out a research project outside the Canary Islands. The rates are approximately 1,500 EUR per month on the Spanish mainland and approximately 2,000 EUR per month abroad. The grant covers a period of 6 to 12 months and may be extended in exceptional cases. It commences on 1 January of the year following your application. The grant covers only travel and accommodation costs, but not tuition fees or a salary. It is provided by the Fundación Canaria Doctor Manuel Morales, a foundation on the island of La Palma established in memory of a doctor from the Canary Islands.

Who can apply

  • Degree: You hold a Spanish ‘Licenciado’ or ‘Grado’ degree, as well as an official Master’s degree or a PhD.
  • Where you do the project: You are conducting research at a specialist institution outside the Canary Islands, in Spain or abroad, under the supervision of an established researcher.
  • Origin: You were born in the Canary Islands or studied at the University of La Laguna. If you studied there, you can apply even if you are not originally from the Canary Islands.
  • Grades: Your average mark is above 5 on a scale from 0 to 10, taking into account how many attempts were required for each exam.
  • Field of study: Applicants from all disciplines are welcome to apply, although preference will be given to those from the health sciences.
  • Recent graduate: You will be given priority if you completed your degree less than 8 years ago.
  • No double funding: You may not receive any other scholarship at the same time, unless it is a case of verified co-funding.

How to apply

Please send a written application by post, with proof of receipt, to the Chair of the Foundation and, at the same time, submit a PDF copy of all your documents by email. The application deadline is around the end of October (in earlier rounds on 23 October), with funding commencing the following January.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is awarded to only a very small number of applicants. You must hold a Master’s or PhD degree, have been born in the Canary Islands or have graduated from the University of La Laguna, and be prepared to undertake a research placement abroad. This means that the pool of applicants remains small. If you clearly meet these criteria, are working in the field of health sciences and have recently completed your degree, your chances are good – particularly if you apply by the deadline.
