About this grant / loan

J.H. Britton Fund for Music

You will be reimbursed for expenses relating to your music studies, provided these are not funded elsewhere, such as the participation fee for a summer school of music or a masterclass (an intensive short course led by an experienced musician). The amount of the grant is determined on a case-by-case basis; there is therefore no fixed rate and no set duration. The fund is administered by the Department of Music at the University of Bristol.

Who can apply

  • University: You are currently a student at the University of Bristol.
  • Field of study: You can take Music either as a stand-alone subject or in combination with another subject.
  • Level: You are a student on an undergraduate or postgraduate programme.
  • Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
  • Purpose: The costs relate to your music studies and are not funded from any other source.
  • How often: As a rule, you can only receive funding once. PhD students may be eligible for further funding if their progress report is favourable.

How to apply

First, discuss your plan with the head of the teaching department. You should then submit a written application to the head of the department (Music), which must include a full breakdown of costs and a description of how the funds are to be used. Preference will be given to projects that take place during your studies up to the end of the summer following your graduation.

How realistic are your chances?

This fund has strict eligibility criteria: only current music students at Bristol can apply, and the funding is intended to fill a specific gap for which no other funding is available. Consequently, the pool of eligible applicants is small. If you have a clear plan, including a breakdown of costs – for example, for a summer school or a masterclass – and discuss this with the department first, your chances are good. As decisions on funding are made on a case-by-case basis, a well-reasoned justification is crucial.
