Study grants at the University of Insubria

You will receive financial support for your studies at University of Insubria in Varese and Como, Italy. The main form of support is a means-tested grant (Borsa di studio), which begins at EUR 409; the exact amount depends on your family income and the distance from your home to the campus. This is funded by the Lombardy Region and the Ministry of Education. The university considers all eligible students, so there is no fixed number of places. In addition to the financial support, you can make use of subsidised meals in the university canteens as well as affordable student accommodation. A separate merit-based scholarship (Borse di studio di Ateneo) rewards high-achieving students in their first year of study.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are enrolled at the University of Insubria in Varese or Como.
• Degree level: You are studying on a Bachelor’s degree programme, a Master’s degree programme (single-cycle model) or a Master’s degree programme. The merit-based scholarships are intended exclusively for students in their first year of study.
• Field of study: All participants are eligible to take part.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. If you are an international student, you will need a certificate of equivalent income (ISEE Parificato). You can obtain this from an Italian tax advice centre (CAF).
• Financial need: To be eligible for the regional grant, your family income must be below the specified threshold, which is determined on the basis of the Italian ISEE score. You must also meet certain minimum academic performance requirements.
• Not for exchange students: These scholarships do not apply to Insubria students taking part in an exchange programme.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the university’s student portal (‘Servizi Web Diritto allo studio’). For the means-tested grant, the application window for 2026/2027 opens on 24. July 2026 and ends on 24 April. The application period for the merit-based scholarship for Bachelor’s and single-cycle students runs from 3 August to 5 October 2026. The application deadline for subsidised accommodation ends earlier, namely on 24 August 2026.

How realistic are your chances?

The means-tested scholarship is not a competition against other applicants. The university considers all eligible students; therefore, if you meet the income and academic performance thresholds, you will receive funding. Merit-based scholarships are more selective and reward outstanding results in the first year of study. Apply early and have your ISEE certificate to hand, as there may be delays in issuing it, particularly for international students.
