What you get

For an outstanding dissertation in the field of Greek or Latin language and literature, you will receive a one-off award of about 720 EUR. The University of Oxford awards this prize through its Department of Classical Philology. This is a one-off award, not a monthly scholarship. The funds come from the Gaisford Fund, which was established in 1855 in memory of Thomas Gaisford, a long-serving professor of Greek at Oxford.

• Field of study: Their field of research is Greek or Latin language and literature (Classical Philology).
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• The work itself: You have written an outstanding doctoral thesis. The prize is awarded for the doctoral thesis, so it is the quality of this work that counts above all else.

How realistic are your chances?

Only PhD students at the University of Oxford who specialise in Greek or Latin language and literature are eligible to win, so the pool of candidates is small. It is a single prize for the best doctoral thesis; it is therefore not awarded to all eligible candidates, but to the most outstanding piece of work. If your thesis is truly outstanding in this field, you have a genuine chance of winning the prize.
