University College Cork - The Edward Gurr Prize

General Description

The Edward Gurr Prizes are in honor of Edward Gurr who was a Research Associate at University College Cork for a number of years.

One of the Edward Gurr Prizes is awarded to a First Year Medical student. It is valued at €800. The top three first year medical students that obtain the highest histology marks in the continuous assessment exam will be invited to sit a written exam. The written exam will be on the histological principles underlying tissue structure and its relationship to human health and disease.

Another Edward Gurr Prize is awarded to a second year Dental student. The prize is valued at €800. The top 10% of students in the Anatomy component of the progressive assessment are eligible. They have to submit their histology notebooks and be deemed sufficient by the Professor of Anatomy.

The written exams are judged by a panel from the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience and a winner is chosen. Both prizes are awarded yearly.

Requirements

To be eligible a student must be registered as a first Year medical student/ as a second year Dental student at University College Cork. Candidates for these awards must place in the top three highest histology marks in the continuous assessment exam that year/ top 10% of their class in the Anatomy portion of the progressive assessment. The student must then be invited to the written exam and compete with the other students for the prize.
