About this scholarship

Finnish Cultural Foundation, North Karelia Regional Fund grant

You will receive a grant to fund your research, artistic work or cultural project in North Karelia, a region in eastern Finland. The amount of the grant depends on your project. For longer-term research or artistic projects, the fund may award two-year grants, with an interim payment made halfway through the grant period. The funding comes from the North Karelia Regional Fund (Pohjois-Karjalan rahasto), one of the regional funds of the Finnish Cultural Foundation (Suomen Kulttuurirahasto). In recent years, the fund has distributed almost 898,000 EUR annually in the region. It places particular emphasis on culture for children and young people, as well as on encouraging young people to read.

Who can apply

  • Who you are: You may apply as an individual or as an organisation. You must be a Finnish citizen or live or work in Finland. You may also apply if your work has a clear and close connection to Finland or Finnish culture.
  • What you do: You are carrying out academic research (including doctoral or postdoctoral work), artistic work, organising an event or running a cultural project.
  • Link to the region: Work done in or about North Karelia is preferred, as are applicants who were born in, live in or work in the region.
  • Field of study: Open to all fields of science and the arts.
  • Age: No age limit.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the Finnish Cultural Foundation’s funding portal. The application period runs each year from 15 to 30 October. A nine-member committee of the North Karelia Fund decides on the awards, and you will be notified of the result by email in the second week of February.
