About this scholarship

What you get

You will receive a one-off grant for research in the field of genetics. The most recent grants awarded ranged from 990 EUR to 3,000 EUR. In 2026, a total of 13,470 EUR was distributed amongst eight recipients. When applying, you can choose between two types of funding: a research grant to cover your living costs during the research period, or a project grant to cover specific costs such as equipment, travel expenses or conference fees. The funding comes from the Kuopio Nature Friends Association (Kuopion Luonnon Ystäväin Yhdistys r.y., KLYY), which awards a bequest from the biologist Betty Vaananen for research in the field of genetics.

Who can apply

  • Field: You carry out research in the field of genetics.
  • Level: You are a researcher, part of a research group, or a student. This covers a researcher's working grant, doctoral research, or a Master's thesis (pro gradu).
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, and you do not need to be resident in Finland.
  • University: Any university counts.
  • Regional ties: It is an advantage to be from the Savo region in Finland, but it is not a requirement.

How to apply

Download the Betty Vaananen application form from the KLYY website, complete it, sign the printed copy and submit it together with your supporting documents. The application deadline is 31 March each year. Successful applicants will be notified in early May. If you are awarded the scholarship, you should be prepared to present your research findings at a KLYY event or to write about them for a KLYY publication.
