About this award / prize

Finnish Chemical Society Young Researcher Prize

For an outstanding Master’s thesis in chemistry, you will receive a one-off cash prize of around 2,500 EUR. The Finnish Chemical Society (Suomalaisten Kemistien Seura, SKS) has been awarding this prize every year since 1972. As a rule, one prize is awarded each year.

Who can apply

  • Degree: You have written a Master’s thesis (diploma thesis or Pro-Gradu thesis) in chemistry or chemical engineering.
  • University: You wrote your dissertation at a Finnish university.
  • Timing: You submitted your dissertation last year. The 2025 Prize, for example, was awarded on the basis of dissertations completed in the year 2024.
  • Quality: Your dissertation is characterised by a clear, systematic research design, a well-founded analysis and a strong command of chemical methods.
  • Nationality: Applicants of any nationality may apply, provided they have studied at a Finnish higher education institution.

How to apply

You do not need to apply yourself. Finnish universities put forward their best final-year theses, and a committee of the Finnish Chemical Society selects the winner. The prize is announced and presented at the Society’s annual conference in the spring, usually in March or April.
