About this scholarship

Scholarships from the Häme Students Foundation

You will receive financial support for your studies or research at University of Helsinki if you are a member of the Häme Student Nation (Hämäläis-Osakunta), a regional student association. The foundation, which was established in 1962, awards three scholarships each year:

  • Study grant: A one-off sum for your first bachelor's or master's degree. The committee sets the amount each year based on your grades, your finances and how active you are in the student society. Paid in December.
  • Master's thesis grant: A one-off payment whilst you are writing your Master’s thesis. The amount is set each year. The payment is made in May.
  • Research grant: A scholarship for one year of full-time doctoral research. It covers your living costs, social security contributions (approx. 15%) as well as standard travel, materials, equipment and workspace costs. You may also work part-time, for example by extending a one-year scholarship to two years. As it is intended for full-time study, you may not receive any other work-related grant or claim unemployment benefit at the same time. Part-time work is limited to approximately 1.25 days per week.

Who can apply

  • University: You are studying or conducting research at the University of Helsinki.
  • Membership: You are a registered member of the Häme Student Nation (Hämäläis-Osakunta). You must register at the association’s office every academic year. Simply paying the membership fee is not enough.
  • Study grant: You are currently completing your first Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, have been a member for at least three semesters at the time of application, and are earning an average of at least 25 ECTS credits per academic year. You may receive this grant a maximum of twice (once for your Bachelor’s degree and once for your Master’s degree).
  • Master's thesis grant: You are writing your master's thesis and have been a registered member for all your current semesters, or for at least six semesters. You can get this grant once.
