About this scholarship

What you get

You will receive a research grant of at least 2,000 EUR. The exact amount is determined on a case-by-case basis for each recipient, and the list 2025 contains grants of up to 3,000 EUR. The grant is intended to fund scientific research, primarily clinical doctoral research (work on a dissertation) in the fields of orthopaedics, traumatology and hand surgery. A separate grant from the Timo Kemilä Fund supports research in the field of arthroscopy or cartilage. The funding comes from the Finnish Research Foundation for Orthopaedics and Traumatology (Ortopedian ja traumatologian tutkimussäätiö), which supports research in these fields every year.

Who can apply

  • Field: Your research focuses on the fields of orthopaedics, traumatology or hand surgery.
  • Type of work: You are working on a clinical PhD thesis, i.e. a research project as part of your doctoral thesis.
  • Who you are: You are researchers in these fields.
  • Nationality: You are a Finnish citizen.
  • University: Any university is fine.
  • After the award: You will subsequently submit a report on your research findings.

How to apply

You apply through an online form on the foundation's website (otts.fi), which opens when the application period starts. The call is announced in August, and the deadline is the last day of September. Grants are handed out in November at the Annual Meeting of the Finnish Orthopaedic Association, during the Orthopaedics and Traumatology Days, where you collect your award certificate.
