About this scholarship
Fund for Biological and Environmental Sciences (University of Helsinki)
You will receive a one-off grant of up to 2,000 or 3,000 EUR – depending on which call for proposals you are applying for – for research projects in the fields of biology and environmental sciences at the University of Helsinki. In the 2025 round, there are three options:
- Up to 2,000 EUR from the ‘Academician Ilkka Hanski’ Fund for research in the fields of (population) ecology and conservation biology.
- Up to 3,000 EUR from the Heinonsalo Fund to cover material costs in biological and environmental sciences.
- Up to 3,000 EUR from the Biology and Environment Fund as research and travel grants for work in the field of genetics.
The money comes from donated assets managed by the University of Helsinki’s funds, which award around 400,000 euros in grants and scholarships each year.

- University: You are studying, conducting research or working at the University of Helsinki.
- Study level: You are a PhD student or a researcher. The Heinonsalo Fund is also open to postgraduate students.
