About this scholarship

Kidney Foundation research scholarship (Munuaissäätiö)

You will receive a one-off research grant, usually amounting to between 2,000 EUR and 6,000 EUR, to fund your medical research into kidney or urinary tract diseases. The foundation determines the amount of the grant on a case-by-case basis for each award and transfers it directly to your personal bank account. The funding body is the Munuaissäätiö (Kidney Foundation), which was established in the year 1974 under the umbrella of the Finnish Kidney and Liver Association. It awards the grants once a year in a single round of funding. You may receive funding up to three times for your PhD and up to three times for your postdoctoral research.

Who can apply

  • Who it is for: You are currently working on your doctoral thesis or have already completed your doctorate, but are not yet a senior lecturer or professor.
  • Research topic: Your project focuses on kidney or urinary tract diseases. Clinical, epidemiological, translational and basic research are all equally relevant.
  • Proof of a start: For your first funding application, you must provide evidence that your research has already begun. If your doctoral thesis consists of several papers, at least one of them must have been published or accepted for publication.
  • Where you research: You are carrying out your research in Finland.

How to apply

Please complete the Foundation’s online application form (a PDF document available on its website) and submit it by email by 3 September 2026 at 24:00. Applications received after this deadline will not be considered. A scholarship committee will assess the applications and recommend candidates for funding; the Foundation’s board will make the final decision. You will be notified of the result by email.

How realistic are your chances?

In 2026, the foundation distributed 58,000 EUR amongst several researchers in a single annual funding round.
