About this scholarship

Finnish Nursing Education Foundation (SHKS) research grant

You will receive funding for research or development work in the field of nursing science in Finland. The amount is determined on a project-by-project basis. The only fixed requirement in the guidelines is that if a grant is used to pay a PhD student’s salary, that salary must be at most 3,000 EUR per month. Postdoctoral and development projects may span several years, but you must submit a new application each year. The funding is provided by the Sairaanhoitajien koulutussäätiö sr (SHKS), a foundation that promotes nursing science as well as better, evidence-based care and training. You can submit the application on your own behalf or on behalf of your organisation.

Who can apply

  • Who is funded: You are an early-career researcher, a PhD candidate writing a dissertation, or you run an evidence-based project to improve nursing care or nurse training.
  • Early-career limit: If you are applying as a postdoctoral researcher, no more than 5 years of active research may have elapsed since you completed your doctoral thesis.
  • Field: You work in the field of nursing science (hoitotiede) or in nursing.
  • No double salary: You are not currently receiving a salary from a university graduate school or a PhD programme.
  • Waiting period: If you have previously received an SHKS scholarship, at least 2 years have passed since the year it was awarded.
  • Nationality and university: Applicants of all nationalities and from all institutions are welcome to apply.
  • Not funded: Single trips and bachelor's degrees at universities or universities of applied sciences.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the Foundation’s online funding system in Finnish, Swedish or English. Please attach a research or implementation plan of no more than 10 pages, together with the required appendices. The application window runs every year from 1 August to 31 August. External expert reviewers assess all applications, and the Foundation’s Board makes the final decision. There is no interview.
