About this award / prize

Maurice Bouvet and Henri Bonnemain Award

For a dissertation or a paper on the history of pharmacy, you will receive a one-off prize of 1,000 EUR. This could be a history of an old chemist’s, a historical remedy or a pharmacist from the past. You will also be awarded the title ‘lauréat de l’Académie nationale de Pharmacie’ and an engraved medal, which will be presented to you at the Academy’s annual ceremony. The prize is awarded by the Académie nationale de Pharmacie in France. It is jointly sponsored by the Société d’Histoire de la Pharmacie and the Bonnemain family.

Who can apply

  • What you submit: You are the author of a doctoral thesis or a dissertation on the history of pharmacy.
  • Language: The paper must be written in French.
  • Timing: The work should have been published recently, ideally within the last two years.
  • Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
  • Degree: A French state-awarded degree in pharmacy (Diplôme d’État de Docteur en Pharmacie) or an equivalent EU qualification is used solely as a deciding factor in the event that two applications are deemed to be of equal merit. This qualification is not required for the application.
  • Exclusion: Members of the Académie nationale de Pharmacie are ineligible to apply.

How to apply

Please email your full application documents to the Academy’s secretariat. The application deadline for the 2024 cycle was 5 September. The Academy’s selection panel will make its decision internally; there will be no separate interview.

How realistic are your chances?

This is an annual prize with a very narrow focus. It is awarded to the author of a French-language work on the history of pharmacy – a niche field in which there are only a few candidates each year. If your work fits this exact subject and language requirement, you will be up against very little competition. Preference is given to PhD students in pharmacy only in the event of a tied vote, meaning that a compelling submission stands a genuine chance of winning on the strength of its quality alone.
