About this scholarship
Alliance Call for Doctoral Mobility
You will receive a grant of up to about 4,600 EUR (5,000 USD) for a research placement abroad whilst you are studying for your PhD. The amount covers your travel and living expenses. You will be reimbursed upon your return, once you have submitted a report detailing your expenses. The funding is provided by the Alliance, a partnership between Columbia University in New York and three institutions in Paris: Sciences Po, École Polytechnique and Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. During your stay, a professor from the host institution will supervise your work.
Who can apply
- Level: You are enrolled on a PhD programme.
- Where you study now: You are a PhD student at one of the four partner institutions: Columbia University, Sciences Po, École Polytechnique or Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne.
- Where you go: Students studying in Paris undertake their research placement at Columbia University in New York. Students studying at Columbia University go to one of the three Parisian institutions.
- Field of study: Open to all academic disciplines.
- Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
- Host contact: You have a professor at the host institution who is willing to supervise you and will send you a letter of invitation.
How to apply
Apply by 31 December using the Alliance’s online form in English. Your doctoral supervisor will submit a letter of recommendation directly, and you must submit a description of your research project of no more than three pages. A panel of professors will then select the scholarship recipients based on the quality and feasibility of the project.
How realistic are your chances?
This funding is very limited: you must already be a PhD student at one of the just four partner institutions, meaning that only a small number of people are eligible. If you belong to this group, have a clearly defined research project and are supported by a professor at the host university, your chances are good. Establishing contact at an early stage with a strong point of contact at the host university is the most important factor distinguishing successful applicants from others.
