About this award / prize

Young Researchers Award (Prix JCJC)

You have been awarded the 500 EUR for outstanding work in the field of the philosophy of science. The prize is awarded every two years at the congress of the Société de philosophie des sciences (SPS), a French-speaking scientific society. The authors of the five best papers will also have their annual SPS membership fee reimbursed. If your paper is deemed to be of high quality but has not yet been published, the jury may recommend it for publication in ‘Lato Sensu’, the society’s journal.

Who can apply

  • Career stage: You are a PhD student or completed your PhD no more than 7 years ago.
  • Field: You specialise in the philosophy of science.
  • Membership: You are a member of the SPS.
  • What you submit: An article of your choice, in French or English. It may be unpublished or have been published within the last three years.
  • Anonymised: Please remove your name from the article, as the judging panel will assess it anonymously.
  • Nationality and university: Applicants of all nationalities and from all universities are welcome to apply.

How to apply

Please email your anonymised article to SPS before the deadline. In the last round, the deadline was 30 April. Each article is reviewed by two experts in a blind review process; a jury comprising members of the SPS Executive Board then evaluates the entries and selects the winner. The results will be announced in September.

How realistic are your chances?

There is just one prize up for grabs in a small field of entrants, and 57 entries were received in the final round – so competition is fierce. Only the best entry will receive 500 EUR. It all comes down to the quality of a single article – not your grades or your background. If you submit your best work, you’ll have the best chance of winning, and even a place in the top five will secure you a free membership.
