About this scholarship

Marie-Louise Furnestin-Faure Grant

You will receive a one-off payment of up to 1,500 EUR grant to support a research project abroad. This is a one-off payment, not a monthly allowance, and is intended to supplement a budget that you have already drawn up. The grant is awarded by the ‘Association Française des Femmes Diplômées des Universités’ (AFFDU), a French network of female university graduates which campaigns for equal access to education. It covers research projects in the fields of zoology, marine biology, ecology and environmental sciences. The AFFDU usually awards two such grants per round.

Who can apply

  • Women only: The scholarship is open to female students and researchers.
  • Study phase: You are nearing completion of your doctoral thesis or are currently working as a postdoctoral researcher. Second-year doctoral students may also apply, but will only be considered as second-choice candidates.
  • Field: Your field of work is in zoology, marine biology, ecology or environmental sciences.
  • Age: You are under 40.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
  • Going abroad: Cross-border projects are given priority: a French student conducting research abroad, or a foreign student conducting research in France.
  • Membership: You are a member of AFFDU or one of its partner organisations within the GWI network in your country.
  • Not yet established: You have not yet established yourself professionally and have never before received an AFFDU scholarship.

How to apply

Please submit your complete application documents by email each year by 31 May. You will receive a response by the end of June.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is very narrowly defined: it is aimed exclusively at women under the age of 40 who are currently completing their PhDs or conducting postdoctoral research in specific fields of biology and ecology, and who are working on a cross-border project. As a result, the group of eligible applicants is small. If you clearly meet these criteria and have a sound, well-documented research plan as well as a confirmed host institution, your chances are good.
